The Marathi Debate Society’s 2017-18 season began with a session on the Basics of Debating and Elocution.
Activities And Competitions Conducted
An intra-college elocution competition in the month of September was conducted. The ranks obtained in the same served as the basis for participation in Debate and Elocution competitions outside the college. This year saw an increased participation of students in various state-level debate competitions and locution competitions, some of which have been produced below:
9th State Level Marathi Elocution Competition:
Marathi Debating Society organized the 9th edition of the ILS State-level Elocution Competition on 15th December 2016. 40 students from all over Maharashtra participated in the competition. The participants were given four topics to speak in the preliminary round. The final round was extempore, where the topics were provided on the spot. The competition was judged by shri. Shreeranjan Awate, Mrs. Swatee Yogesh and Mrs. Ashwini Satav-Doke. The Elocution competition was conducted by Swapnil Falke, Harshita Shahapurkar, Rahul Gangurde, Prajakta Nagrale, Satyajit Landage, Vaibhav More, Swapnil Suryavanshi, Ashpaq Mulani, Shubham Barkade, Rutuja Bhagawat, Ashwini Sanap, under the guidance of Prof. Nitish Nawsagaray. The competition was sponsored by Tangent – The furniture mall, Aundh, Pune.

- 2. Second position – Rushi Deshpande, COEP, Pune
- 3. Third position – Shoeb Moulali Sheikh, Walchand college, Solapur.

Report of 6th Justice V.M Tarkunde Memorial National Parliamentary Debate, 2018

The 6th Annual Justice V.M. Tarkunde Memorial National Parliamentary Debate was conducted from 12th to 14th January, 2018. The competition saw participation of 46 teams and 74 adjudicators, representing 27 institutions from all over India. The competition was divided in 5 preliminary rounds on the 12th and the 13th of January in which the teams debated on a variety of themes spanning Crime and Justice, International Relations, Feminism, Religion and Public Policy.
The adjudication core for this year’s competition comprised of Osho Chhel (V B.A.,LL.B., National Law School of India University), Tushar Kanakagiri (Ex- student of National Law School of India University, Bengaluru), Yash Sharma(Jawaharlal Nehru University), Sreeram VG(IV B.A.,-LL.B., Symbiosis Law School, Pune).
12 teams, with the highest number of wins and cumulative speaker scores qualified to the pre-quarter finals held on the 14th of January. The finals saw a Panel of 5 judges, chaired by Sarleen Kaur (Symbiosis Law School, Pune), Yash Sharma(JNU), Sreeram VG (Symbiosis Law School, Pune), Anushri (Christ University), Subham (Institute of Law, Nirma University). In a 3:2 split verdict, the cross team comprising Anish Ravishankar, Trishal Kumar and Advesh Jalan, a cross institutional team from NLSIU and Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering) on the side of Government, beat the team comprising Aniruddha Nigam, Siddharth Aatreya and Karan Dhalla from National Law School of India University, Bangalore (NLSIU), on the side of Opposition. The winners were awarded a cash prize of INR 27,000 and the runners-up were awarded INR 18,000. Additionally, Aniruddha Nigam from NLSIU was awarded Best Speaker with a cash prize of INR 7,000 and Sarleen Kaur from Symbiosis Law School, Pune, was awarded Best Adjudicator with a cash prize of INR 7,000. Anushri Rastogi from Christ University and Aastha Kapoor from Symbiosis Law School, Pune, shared the second best adjudicator award. Himanshu Patil was awarded the Best Internal Adjudicator with a cash prize of INR 3,000.
The semi-finalist teams were Piali Bopanna, Nishath S and Vasundhara Paul of Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering and Heena Dabke, Abhishek and Akshat Kejriwal from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Cumulatively, semi-finalists were awarded cash prizes of INR 18,000.
This year saw significant novice participation, with the addition of a Novice Break, a separate round of qualification for debaters with less than 3 prior debates experience. The Novice winning team comprised Anahad Narain, Vrishank Singhania, Saurabh Gupta from National Law School of India University, Bangalore (NLSIU), who beat Raghav Agarwal, Akshay Shrivasta, Punit Agarwal from Vellore Institute of Technology. The judges panel comprised 5 adjudicators namely, Lisa Mishra (III B.A.,LL.B., ILS Law College), who was the chair; Aastha Kapoor (SLS, Pune), Sagar Jaikumar (Government Law College), Vinamre Dhar (PES University), Sarleen Kaur(SLS, Pune).
The success of this competition was only possible because of the generous contributions by Karanjawala & Co. They have previously been associated with Tarkunde PD and their continuous support has helped bring this competition to its present glory. Also, sponsorship from SCC, M/s Good Foods, an eatery on F.C. Road, Pune contributed to the success of the competition.
