Equal opportunity cum enabling cell was established in ILS Law College in 2013-14 with an objective to promote ideals of inclusion, assimilation and integration of disable students with their able-bodied counterparts. This year the college had around 20 disabled students across the range of disabilities.
The main activity of the Cell this year was the hosting of one-day Career Counselling cum Motivation Workshop for college-going differently-abled students in collaboration with Student Welfare Department of ILS Law College on 17th January 2016. The Board of Student Welfare, Savitribai Phule Pune University sanctioned a sum of Rs. 75,000 for the organization of this event. The highlights of this event were the presentations by two extraordinary achievers, Ms. Beno Zephine, (first visually impaired IFS officer) and Ms. Shivani Gupta (reputed access auditor).
Ms. Beno during her presentation motivated the students to take upon UPSC exams. She emphasized that if one has the will power, no odds can prove impediments. Shivani Gupta, apart from dealing with recently launched ‘Accessible India’ Campaign also emphasized on the issue of accessibility. She said that, both physical and attitudinal barriers have to be eliminated for creation of accessible and enabling environment.
On this occasion, Dr. Sanjay Jain also made a presentation on “Accessible ICT”. He emphasized that adoption of inclusive design can prove very effective in making Information Communication Technology, the most effective enabler. The musical performances by the Orchestra of Kothrud Girls’ Blind School made the atmosphere extremely melodious. The programme was attended by more than 130 students across the city.
